Connecting Families is a support network of Brethren and Mennonite persons committed to providing mutual support for families with gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or intersex members. As a part of the Christian/Anabaptist tradition, we respect the various places people are in their spiritual journeys and in their pilgrimage of understanding of gay and lesbian concerns. We are a group of people, each on our own journey. Through listening and sharing our stories, we seek to provide support for families whose children are coming out to them and/or to their church. Connecting Families East began 30 years ago as a group of parents with lgbtq children coming together for support and care. Since then the group has expanded to include family members, allies, and those in the lgbtq community. The gathering includes worship, education, storytelling, and mutual support, all within a context of joy and community.

2020 Connecting Families East Weekend

Becoming the Whole Church: Moving Beyond Inclusion

May 15-17, 2020 at Laurelville, Mount Pleasant, PA.

“Becoming the Whole Church: Moving Beyond Inclusion” is the focus of this year’s Connecting Families – East weekend May 15-17 at Laurelville, a Christian Retreat Center in the Laurel Highlands of PA.  Ron Adams serves as Lead Pastor of Landisville Mennonite Church.

Ron says this about his input, “Too often our focus is on how we as the Church can welcome and include LGBTQ folks. Beneath that welcome is an unspoken assumption of power over LGBTQ folks, with a heteronormative community opening itself up out of a spirit of kindness and generosity. While that impulse to welcome and include is certainly a step forward from the hostility, exclusivity and rejection historically on offer, is it enough? Or are we called to imagine something more, something beyond inclusion, something that better reflects the extravagance of God’s love for all?”

The retreat aims to create a space of mutual support for families, friends, and LGBTQI people with the opportunity to meet, share, and worship together.
